A short but rewarding trek connecting Paro and Thimphu, passing by pristine lakes, ancient dzongs, and rhododendron forests. Perfect for beginners!

This is a scenic high-altitude trek  and traverses through lush forests, alpine meadows, and traditional Bhutanese villages, offering stunning views of the Himalayas, including peaks like Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake.

The trek connects the capital city of Thimphu to the cultural hub of Paro, passing through picturesque landscapes, serene lakes, and ancient monasteries.

This trek is known for its relatively moderate difficulty, making it accessible to trekkers with a range of experience levels, and provides a deep immersion into Bhutan's natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Tour itinerary

After breakfast, you'll drive past the National Museum (2,487 meters) and travel through apple orchards and smallholdings until you arrive at Damchena village. From there, we'll begin a trek towards Jele Dzong, situated at 3,490 meters on a whaleback ridge. Although Jele Dzong is largely in ruins, it features a Lhakhang with a statue of Buddha Sakyamuni. On clear days, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of Paro town, its fertile valley, and Mount Jumolhari (7,325 meters).

We will then embark on a gradual ascent before descending below the ridgeline, following trails through dense alpine forests and rhododendrons. You may encounter yak herders along the way. Our trek continues uphill to a yak herders’ pasture at Jangchulakha (3,780 meters), where we'll set up camp for the night. Overnight camp 

Altitude: 2300m

After breakfast, drive for 15 minutes to the starting point of the hike to Takshang Monastery, famously known as the "Tiger's Nest." This site, visited and sanctified by Guru Rimpoche, is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in the Himalayas, attracting many great Buddhist masters over the years. The monastery was built in 1692 AD by the fourth temporal ruler of Bhutan, over the cave where Guru Rimpoche and his consort, Khandro Yeshi Tshogyal, meditated. Perched on a rocky cliff that towers 800 meters above the valley, the monastic complex stands at an elevation of 2950 meters above sea level.

On your return, stop at Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. Overnight at the hotel 

Altitude : 3150m, Distance :7km Trek : 5hrs, Ascent : 600m, Descend :600m

From the camp, we will trek uphill towards the ridge passing through juniper trees and dwarf rhododendrons. We will then follow the ridge with the views of the mountain ranges of Thimphu and Paro and also some snowcapped mountain such as Jichu Drake (6,989 meters. 

After following the ridge for a while we will then take a steep descent towards Jimilangtsho Lake (3,880 meters), renowned for its giant-sized trout. We will camp overnight near Jimilangtsho Lake.

Altitude : 3880m, Distance :11km Trek : 5hrs, Ascent : 400m, Descend :300m 

The trail takes you through dwarf rhododendron trees and bypasses the lake of Janetsho. You may come across some yak herder’s camp and get an idea how these people live. Trail winds and undulates with magnificent view of the Himalaya across deep valleys. Simkota tsho Lake (4110m) can be seen below after crossing one final spur. Our campsite for the night will be close to the lake. Overnight camp 

Altitude : 4110m, Distance :12km Trek : 5hrs, Ascent : 270m

We will start with a gradual climb to a small saddle at 4,150 meters, where you'll be rewarded with majestic views of Mount Gangkar Puensum and other Himalayan peaks, weather permitting. From there, you'll descend to a small lake before climbing up to the Phume La Pass (4,210 meters), adorned with beautiful prayer flags. From this vantage point, you'll enjoy spectacular views of Thimphu city far below. The trail then gradually descends through juniper trees to a community hall near Phajoding (3,870 meters). Continue downhill through a forest of blue pine and juniper until you reach the roadhead at Sangaygang on the outskirts of Thimphu Valley. Overnight at the hotel 

Altitude : 2300m, Distance :14km Trek : 7hrs, Ascent : 100m, Descend :1800m 

We will start by visiting the Buddha Dordenma statue, which overlooks Thimphu Valley, followed by the Memorial Chorten, built in honor of the third king. Next, we'll explore the Painting School, where students learn 13 unique arts and crafts of Bhutan. We will then visit the weekend market and the Changlimithang Archery Ground to witness a match of Bhutan's national sport.

In the afternoon, we'll drive to Paro and enjoy dinner at a local farmhouse, where you can sample the local alcohol called Ara. We will also try the hot stone bath at the farmhouse. Overnight will be at the hotel.
