Discover Bhutan’s Untouched Wilderness, Rare Species & Eco-Friendly Adventures

Welcome to the heart of the Eastern Himalayas – a land where lush forests, majestic mountains, and vibrant wildlife coexist in pristine harmony. Bhutan is a sanctuary for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and eco-conscious travelers.

With over 70% of its land covered in forest and more than half of its territory designated as protected areas, Bhutan offers a unique chance to explore one of the world’s last unspoiled ecosystems.

A Natural Paradise: Bhutan’s Rich Flora & Fauna

Bhutan’s extraordinary biodiversity is a result of its wide range of altitudes, from subtropical jungles in the south to alpine meadows in the north.

Our Himalayan kingdom is home to an estimated 200 species of mammals and more than 770 species of birds, many of which are rare, endangered, or endemic.

🌿 Flora

Discover a stunning variety of flowers, medicinal plants, and trees as you hike through Bhutan’s forests.

From the rhododendron valleys of Dochula Pass to the ancient cypress trees of Bumthang, nature here flourishes in untouched beauty. Spring and summer bring a riot of wildflowers, making Bhutan a paradise for botanists and eco-tourists alike.

Note: While exploring nature, be cautious around unfamiliar plants. Some species, like nettles or poison ivy relatives, may cause skin irritation. Always follow your guide’s instructions and avoid touching wild plants.

🐾 Fauna

The forests and mountains shelter some of the world’s most elusive animals, including:

  • Takin – Bhutan’s national animal, a goat-antelope found in the Jigme Dorji National Park.

  • Snow Leopard – A rare predator roaming the alpine regions of northern Bhutan.

  • Red Panda – Found in temperate forests, especially in the east.

  • Bengal Tiger – Amazingly, Bhutan is one of the few countries where tigers roam at elevations above 3,000 meters.

  • Himalayan Black Bear, Clouded Leopard, and Golden Langur are also among the notable species.

Travel Tip: Always stay on marked trails, travel with an experienced local guide, and avoid trekking alone. Bhutanese wildlife is best observed quietly and respectfully, from a safe distance.

🐦 Birdwatching & Ornithology

For ornithology enthusiasts, Bhutan is a birdwatching paradise.

Home to over 770 species, including the endangered Black-necked Crane, Satyr Tragopan, and Himalayan Monal, the kingdom attracts bird lovers from across the globe.

The Phobjikha Valley, a glacial valley in central Bhutan, is one of the best spots for crane sightings between November and March.

Binoculars and a field guide are must-haves, and early morning hikes offer the best opportunities for sightings.

Major National Parks & Nature Reserves

Jigme Dorji National Park

As Bhutan’s second-largest national park, Jigme Dorji stretches across the districts of Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gasa, and Laya. Its wide range of altitudes makes it a haven for an incredible diversity of flora, fauna, and endangered species. It’s also one of the best places to spot the takin, musk deer, and the elusive snow leopard.

Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey)

Famous for its winter migration of the Black-necked Cranes, this high-altitude wetland is a must-visit for nature tours and eco-friendly trips. Surrounded by the Black Mountains, the valley is also known for its scenic beauty and tranquil hiking trails.

Royal Manas National Park

Often called the “Crown Jewel” of Bhutan’s parks, Royal Manas borders India and is known for its rich tropical biodiversity. It is home to Asian elephants, rhinoceros, gaur, and over 365 bird species.

Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in the northeastern region of Bhutan, this sanctuary is another important habitat for the Black-necked Crane and includes diverse forest ecosystems. It’s ideal for immersive eco-tours and green tourism experiences.
