Daywise Itinerary

Receive and transfer to hotel and in the late afternoon, visit Rimpong Dzong: Dzongs are the architectural wonders of the country and often the first structures to catch outsiders' attention. Almost all dzongs are strategically located. The original Paro dzong dates back to 1645 but was destroyed by fire in 1907 and rebuilt in the same year. It is home to 200 monks and the district administration. The central tower, or Utse, is said to be the most beautiful in the country. You can visit the Kuenrey or the prayer and study hall of the monks. It is possible to take pictures in the courtyard. Hike down to the old wooden bridge. In olden days, this bridge used to be guarded at night as it was the only entrance to the dzong.

Stroll around the town. It is quite nice to drop into one of the local restaurants for a cup of tea and get a feel for the Bhutanese atmosphere. Overnight at the hotel

Distance: 7km, Temple altitude: 3150m

Today is your warm-up hike for the trek tomorrow. Bhutan's most scenic icon and important place for pilgrimage, and refuge for over 1200 years, the Taktsang or the Tiger's Nest clings 200 meters on the steep cliff overlooking Paro valley. The place was first visited by Guru Rimpoche, the founder of the tantric form of Buddhism in Himalayan countries in the 8th century. It is said that he came there riding on a tigress and meditated in a cave for about three months. After him, many high Buddhist priests came to meditate and attained the highest spirituality. The original temple was built in the 17th century but was burnt by fire in 1998. The temple was rebuilt to its fullest glory in 2003. It is considered the 10th holiest site in the Buddhist world. The total hike will take about four hours. From the parking, it will take about one hour to get to the tea house and another one and a half hours to the temple. In the evening, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples built in the 7th century by the Tibetan king Songchen Gyampo. Try the Bhutanese Jacuzzi or Hot Stone Bath at the farmhouse. Overnight at the hotel

Distance: 22km, 8 – 9hrs, Camp altitude : 3750m

After breakfast, drive to Shana to starting point of your trek. You will be greeted by your team who will escort you during your adventurous trek.

Today will be the longest day of the trek, with many ups and downs that will make it quite tiring. You will cross the isolated farm of Shing Karap at about 3100 meters, and after a while, you will reach the cross point of the trails marked by piled up rocks with prayer flags. The left trail leads to Tibet crossing the pass called Tremo la. On the rock, it is written "way to Soi" with an arrow pointing towards the right trail, which you will follow. The steep climb, followed by a descent, will

take you to the bridge that will allow you to cross to the left side of the river and continue climbing in the forest until the clearing called Thongo Samba, an ideal place for lunch.

The forest is always beautiful, with different types of vegetation. As it is at a high altitude, you may come across yaks. Be careful, as they are not very friendly towards strangers. If they are in the way, keep a good distance and let them pass first. It is always advisable to stay higher on the trail than below them.

The trail will lead you to a bridge and a small white stupa. Do not cross the bridge as it leads to the village of Yaktsa. Half an hour from the bridge is the camp at Soi Thangthangkha.

Overnight at the camp.

Distance: 19km, 5 – 6hrs, Camp altitude : 4040m

It is quite rewarding to wake up early in the morning and admire the sun's rays touching the second-highest peak, Chomolhari (7314m), nestled between two steep valleys. Continue by following the left side of the Pa chhu or Paro River for about an hour, and you will leave behind the tree level to enter a stunning valley. You will cross the military campsite, which guards the border with Tibet. As you go higher, the valley will widen, and you will get a view of some high and snow-capped peaks. You will come across yaks and camps for winter. Along the way, several small houses are found, and this place is called Soia Yutey. Stop here in one of these houses for a cup of butter tea and lunch. The Chomolhari basecamp is just few minutes from the village. In the afternoon, explore the surrounding area by yourself. Overnight camp

Distance: 18km, 6 – 7hrs, Camp altitude : 4010m

The trail follows a stream for around 30 minutes before crossing a bridge to the right side. From there, begin a climb up to the first ridge, where you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Jumolhari (7314m), Jichu Drake (6989m), and Tsherim Gang (6789m). After taking in the views, continue towards the valley, which is mostly flat for a while before gradually ascending to the Ngye La pass, which sits at an altitude of 4870m. Once you've reached the pass, enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and Lingshi Dzong before making a gradual descent to the campsite. If time allows, consider taking a detour to visit Lingshi Dzong, a small fortress situated atop a hill that overlooks Lingzhi village below. For centuries, Lingshi Dzong served as a way station for weary Buddhist pilgrims and as a defensive fort against invaders from Tibet and Mongolia. The campsite sits at an altitude of 4010m.

Distance: 12km, 4 – 5hrs, Camp altitude : 3850m

Nestled atop a hill, Lingshi Dzong offers a spectacular vista of emerald green hills, winding rivers, and majestic peaks. This fortified structure has stood as a sanctuary for Buddhist devotees for centuries, while also serving as a defensive bastion against invasions from Tibet and Mongolia. Today's itinerary is relaxed, offering a delightful stroll through picturesque villages and pastures occupied by yak herders. After a sumptuous lunch, a brief trek will lead you to the charming hamlet of Chebisa, where a dazzling crystal-clear waterfall awaits. Here, by the tranquil murmur of a stream, you will set up camp at an altitude of 3850m, basking in the serenity of nature.

Distance: 17km, 6 – 7hrs, Camp altitude : 4250m

You will embark on an exhilarating journey with a challenging start, as you ascend a steep ridge towards Gogu La pass (4500m), which will take approximately four hours. During your ascent, you may be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the elusive blue sheep grazing on the rocky terrain near the top of the pass. As you make your way down the path, you will traverse through a breathtaking landscape of vibrant rhododendron bushes until you reach a picturesque lunch spot. The afternoon trek will continue with a series of gentle ascents and descents, crossing streams and meandering through lush forests, past traditional yak herder camps, and finally arriving at Shakepasa, nestled at an altitude of 3980m.

From here, the journey becomes more challenging, as you climb steeply towards the northern side of the valley, taking in the magnificent views of the Himalayan range. As you pass by a few more yak herder camps, the trail leads you to a serene campsite beside a babbling stream, situated at an altitude of 4250m. From the pass, you'll have a view of the snow-capped Kangbum peak to the southeast, which stands at an impressive 6526m. After taking in the views, you'll descend to the Tsarijathang valley, which serves as the summer residence of the rare Himalayan Takin, Bhutan's national animal. At some point, we may have to cross the stream, as the footbridge is frequently washed away. After crossing the stream and heading towards the left, the trail will continue to ascend until you reach Robluthang, a rocky meadow camp.

Distance: 19km, 5 – 6hrs, Camp altitude : 4140m

Today's trek will be a truly exhilarating experience as you embark on a journey to cross the highest pass of the entire trek. As you make your way up through boggy patches, you'll be crossing streams and spotting marmot holes and moraines. Finally, you'll reach the top of Shingchen La pass (5005m) where you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the snow-covered Gangchenta or the Tiger Mountain (6840m) that fills the northern horizon.

As you take in the stunning view, you'll begin your descent through a rough and rocky trail, following the moraine river valley until you reach the Kango Chhu River. Be prepared for a narrow path and the possibility of crossing another stream and getting wet. After a fresh walk through the cedar forests, you'll finally arrive at Lingmithang (4140m), a beautiful campsite with scattered meadows by the river, and the Tiger Mountain (Gangchenta) towering majestically behind your campsite. The surroundings offer a peaceful and serene atmosphere that will soothe your soul after an exhilarating day of trekking.

Distance: 10km, 3- 4hrs, Camp altitude : 3850m

As the morning light breaks through the clouds, you will be greeted with an awe-inspiring view of the majestic Gangchenta peak. The trek to Laya is an unforgettable journey, where every step brings you closer to stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. Passing through a dense forest, filled with the lush greenery of moss and the sweet melody of singing birds, the path will lead you through an uninhabited valley. Along the way, you will witness the grace of a cascading waterfall, its crystal-clear water cascading down the rocks. As you continue on the trail, you will reach a junction, where the upper path leads you to fields speckled with charming stone houses. Finally, at an altitude of 3800m, you will arrive at Laya village, the second highest settlement in the country, where the air is crisp and the views are simply breathtaking.

Venture out and discover the beauty of Laya village. You're welcome to visit any of the local homes and experience the warm hospitality that Bhutanese culture is known for. Even to a stranger, you'll be greeted with a friendly smile and offered a cup of tea or Chang, the local wine.

The inhabitants of this valley are particularly intriguing, especially the women who dress in traditional black wool kiras and adorn themselves with conical bamboo hats adorned with turquoise, silver ornaments, and beaded strings. It's a sight to behold and a unique cultural experience to cherish.

Distance: 19km, 7 – 8hrs, Camp altitude : 4160m

The trek takes you through a breathtaking journey, beginning with a descent to the Lunana trail junction, followed by a climb to a hilltop where you'll be rewarded with stunning vistas of the Mo Chhu and the Rhodo Chhu. The trail then winds through the picturesque Rhodo Chhu valley, leading you first through a forest of mixed conifers before opening up to a landscape of lush rhododendron bushes, stretching beyond the treeline.

At the top of a massive rockslide, a sight of the glacial valley and a colossal glacier on Tsenda Gang (7100m) is sure to leave you spellbound. As you continue on, you'll find yourself at our campsite at Rodophu, located at an elevation of 4160m, just beyond a charming wooden bridge that spans across the Rhodo Chhu river.

Here, you'll be able to fully immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the surrounding nature, enjoying the sound of the rushing river and the gentle breeze that passes through the valley. It's an experience that you won't soon forget, as you take in the majesty of the Bhutanese wilderness and marvel at the wonders of the natural world

Distance: 17km, 5 – 6hrs, Camp altitude : 4900m

Today's trek will take you through some of the most spectacular alpine grasslands in the region, where you'll be greeted by herds of majestic yaks roaming freely. Following the trail along the river, you'll pass through a dense thicket of rhododendron shrubs before turning right up a hill. As you continue to climb, you'll gradually emerge into a high open valley filled with verdant meadows that stretch as far as the eye can see. At the pinnacle of this climb, you'll reach Tshomo La Pass (4915m), which will offer you truly awe-inspiring views of Mount Jomolhari and the Tibetan borders beyond.

From here, you'll continue your trek across a barren plateau, criss-crossing several yak trails as you go. Despite the rugged terrain, the sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscape will leave you feeling uplifted and invigorated. As you journey on, you'll eventually arrive at Narithang (4900m), which will serve as your campsite for the evening. Here, you can relax and take in the pristine beauty of the Bhutanese wilderness, surrounded by the majestic mountains and tranquil plains that make this region so special.

Distance: 18km, 6 – 7hrs, Camp altitude : 4350m

Today's journey will lead you to the magnificent Ganglakarchung Pass, situated at an elevation of 5120m. The climb up to the pass may be challenging, but the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains more than make up for it. From this vantage point, you'll be able to witness the grandeur of Kangbum (6530m), Tsendhen Gang (7100m), Teri Gang (7300m), and Jejegangphu Gang (7120m), all of which create a stunning backdrop to your trek.

Descending through massive moraines, you'll soon come to the edge of a straight cliff that affords breathtaking views of a glacial lake hanging from Teri Gang. The lake is a vivid turquoise color and is split into two distinct sections at the base of the mountain. In 1961, an outburst from the left lake caused a flood downstream in Punakha, resulting in the destruction of the Mochu Bridge. The sight of this natural wonder is both mesmerizing and humbling, reminding us of the immense power and beauty of nature.

The descent from the pass follows a steep path that leads you through a U-shaped valley, following the Tangchu stream to your right. Finally, you'll arrive at your campsite, situated at an elevation of 4350m. Here, you can take a well-deserved rest and bask in the peaceful surroundings, surrounded by the stunning vistas of the Bhutanese wilderness.

Distance: 16km, 5 – 6hrs, Camp altitude : 4350m

As you set out on your journey today, your trail will lead you through a serene forest of junipers, tracing the winding course of the Tangchu River as it flows gently to your left. Along the way, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls, their frothy mists rising into the crisp mountain air.

As you continue on, the path will gradually begin to climb, winding its way up out of the valley and into the open expanse of the surrounding hills. But don't be fooled by the gentle ascent - before long, you'll be faced with a steep and challenging climb that will put your endurance and determination to the test.

Finally, after what seems like an eternity of climbing, you'll reach the pinnacle of your ascent and find yourself standing in the quaint and picturesque village of Woche. Perched at an altitude of 4350m, this charming settlement marks the beginning of the Lunana region, and is steeped in rich history and cultural heritage.

As you look out over the rolling hills and rugged mountains beyond, you'll catch a glimpse of the path that lies ahead - a challenging and exhilarating journey that will take you to the breathtaking region of Ledhi. But for now, take a moment to catch your breath, and bask in the simple beauty and serenity of this remarkable place.

Distance: 19km, 6 – 7hrs, Camp altitude : 4200m

As you begin your trek today, the path will lead you up the picturesque valley of Woche, as you ascend towards the towering peaks that loom in the distance. Crossing a small stream, you'll make your way up and over a rocky moraine, before descending to a wooden bridge that spans the glistening waters of the Woche Chu River.

From here, the trail will take you on a challenging ascent up past a crystal-clear glacial lake, as you make your way towards the stunning Keche La pass. Standing at an altitude of 4650m, this majestic pass offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the iconic three-pronged peaks of the Jejegangphu Gang mountain.

Descending from the pass, you'll find yourself in the tranquil Pochu Valley, a peaceful oasis amidst the rugged mountains and rocky terrain. Continuing on, you'll pass through the charming Thaga village, situated at an altitude of 4050m. Here, in the late afternoons, you can expect to feel the chill of bitterly cold winds, especially during the autumn months.

Descending further still, you'll pass by a number of scattered settlements, each one more enchanting than the last. Along the way, you'll marvel at the breathtaking waterfalls that dot the landscape, their cascading torrents of water carving their way through the rocky terrain.

Distance: 19km, 5 – 6hrs, Camp altitude : 4250m

Today's trek promises to be a delightful one, offering a moderate level of challenge that can be tackled with ease. Our journey will commence by following the serene north bank of Phochu River, meandering through several small farms that exude a rustic charm. As we tread further, we will be greeted by the quaint Chuzo Village, situated at an elevation of 4090m. Here, we shall break for lunch, savoring the flavors of the region and taking in the mesmerizing views around.

As we continue along the trail, we will be fortunate to encounter the Chezo Dzong, a magnificent fortification steeped in history and cultural significance. With a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation, we will forge ahead, following the undulating path that leads us along the riverbed. The climb to the hill overlooking Thanza valley, situated at 4250m, will be steep but rewarding. Upon reaching the summit, we shall be rewarded with sweeping vistas that are sure to take our breath away. The rest of the day can be spent admiring the stunning surroundings, soaking in the serene ambiance, and preparing for the next leg of the journey.

Today offers you two exciting options to explore the beautiful Thanza region. The first option is to visit the Thanza Village, a place that is like stepping back in time. The people here have a medieval-like society that has remained virtually untouched for centuries. The locals wear clothes that they make by hand, weaving and dyeing their own material. They fashion their own unique hats, boots, and jewelry, which adds to their distinctive charm. Their homes are built with sturdy stone walls, hand-hewn wood shingles, and clay mortar, showcasing their architectural skills. They lead a simple yet sustainable lifestyle by relying on grains, yak meat, and cheese from the lower valleys.

If you want a more adventurous option, you can hike through the small moraine rocks to reach the clusters of Raphstreng Tsho and Thorthormi Tsho, two nearby glacial lakes. These lakes are the source of the Phochu River of Punakha, which caused a flood in 1994 due to a moraine outburst. Despite the risk, the view of the 7100m Table Mountain (locally known as Zongphu Gang) from here is absolutely breathtaking. The mountain forms a 3000m high wall of ice and snow behind the Thanza Village, adding to the beauty of the region. Whether you choose to visit the village or the glacial lakes, you are sure to have a memorable and enriching experience in Thanza.

Distance: 19km, 7 – 8hrs, Camp altitude : 5120m

As you savor your breakfast, prepare yourself for a breathtaking ascent up the ridge where the mesmerizing Table Mountain and the picturesque Thanza valley lay before your eyes. The ascent to the ridge is gradual, gradually elevating from 4500m to a majestic 4650m. As you continue your journey upwards, make a stop for a delightful picnic lunch and soak in the awe-inspiring views of the snow-capped mountains. Continue your journey by climbing up the ridges, feasting your eyes on the stunning scenery, until you finally reach the Tshorim campsite, perched at a staggering altitude of 5120m.

Distance: 16km, 6 – 7hrs, Camp altitude : 4970m

The day begins with a brief ascent to Tshorim Thso, a serene and picturesque lake that offers breathtaking views of the Gophu La mountain range. As you traverse along the side of the lake, the natural beauty of the surroundings is truly captivating. The final climb to the Gophu La pass (5230m) is relatively short and effortless.

Upon reaching the pass, the awe-inspiring sight of the majestic Gangkhar Puensum mountain range awaits you. As you descend towards the base camp, you will walk along a ridge that provides an unobstructed view of the mountain. For those seeking a more immersive experience, you can take a detour to the left and climb up the pyramid peak to get a better vantage point.

Alternatively, you can choose to descend directly to the base camp situated nearby the Sha Chhu river. The journey towards the base camp is adorned with scenic vistas that are truly a sight to behold.

Distance: 14km, 6 - 7hrs, Camp altitude : 4200m

As you embark on today's trek, you will find that the trail is relatively easier compared to previous days. The path gently follows the winding Sha Chhu, offering tranquil views of the surrounding landscape as you gradually descend towards Geshe Woma, located at an altitude of 4200m.

Along the way, you may encounter local flora and fauna, adding to the natural beauty of the area. Keep an eye out for colorful birds, grazing yaks, and other wildlife that may cross your path.

As you make your way closer to Geshe Woma, take a moment to appreciate the tranquility and peacefulness of the area. You may even catch glimpses of snow-capped mountains in the distance, adding to the serene atmosphere.

Distance: 18km, 6 – 7hrs, Camp altitude : 4000m

As the sun rises, we begin our trek for the day by following the Sha Chhu for approximately two and a half hours. The path is relatively easy, with a gradual descent towards Geshe Woma, which stands at an altitude of 4200m. After a refreshing breakfast, we commence a steep ascent towards the Saka la pass, situated at 4800m. Due to the low visibility along the Saka la trail, it is highly recommended for trekkers to use the ridge's top to follow the right trail.

Once we reach the Saka la pass, we take a well-deserved break for a picnic lunch near a yak herder's camp. After replenishing our energy, we continue the uphill climb towards the pass, enjoying the breathtaking views along the way. As we descend after crossing the pass, we are greeted with the serene beauty of numerous lakes that are scattered throughout the area. The scene is simply stunning, with the colossal mountain peaks towering in the distance, providing a picturesque backdrop to this idyllic setting.

Distance: 14km, 5 – 6hrs, Camp altitude : 3590m

With the first light of day, we will embark on a short yet rewarding climb towards the Julila pass, perched at an altitude of 4400m. As we reach the top of the pass, we are greeted with a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. After a moment to soak in the beauty of the landscape, we will begin our descent towards the riverside, navigating through dense rhododendron shrubs, juniper and conifer forests. The trail winds its way down towards the gushing river, offering us glimpses of its crystal clear waters as we make our way towards the bridge.

After crossing the bridge, a short climb awaits us as we continue our trek towards the Duer Tsachu, a hot spring that is steeped in legend and lore. According to local folklore, it is believed that Guru Padmasambhava himself bathed in these hot springs, which are said to be one of the most stunningly beautiful hot springs in the entire Himalayan range. After a long day of trekking, there is nothing quite like a dip in the soothing waters of these hot springs, surrounded by the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the Bhutanese wilderness.

Distance: 18km, 8 - 9hrs, Camp altitude : 3850m

After departing from the hot springs, the trail takes us on a long and steady climb, providing breathtaking views of the majestic mountains of Lunana. We first ascend to the Gutong La Pass, which stands tall at an altitude of 4550m, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys. As we continue on our trek, we come across several stunning deep blue lakes, surrounded by lush pastures where yaks can be seen grazing freely. In the vicinity of these lakes, we can spot the traditional huts of the yak herders. After taking in the views, we continue to ascend towards the Jule La Pass, which sits at an altitude of 4685m. The ascent up the pass is demanding but well worth the effort, as we are greeted with more awe-inspiring views. We finally descend towards our campsite at Tshochenchen, situated at an altitude of 3850m.

Distance: 27km, 9 – 10hrs, Camp altitude : 3190m

After breakfast, we will start our trek downhill from Tshochenchen, following the Yoleng Chhu river. As we make our way through the dense forests, we will be surrounded by a variety of tall trees, including cypress, spruce, juniper, maple and hemlock, providing a natural canopy overhead. The trail will lead us through a series of switchbacks, as we navigate the steep terrain, and make our way towards the Gursum campsite.

After a short climb, we will arrive at our destination and set up camp. The campsite is located in a picturesque area, surrounded by tall trees, and with a gentle river flowing nearby. It will provide a perfect setting for rest and relaxation, after a long day of trekking. The peaceful atmosphere, fresh air and the natural beauty of the surroundings, will help us unwind and rejuvenate for the next leg of our journey.

Day 26 : Gursum – Dur village – Bumthang

Distance: 18km, 6 - 7hrs,  altitude : 2500m

After a satisfying breakfast, we will continue on our trek, following the Chamkhar Chhu. Though the path may involve a few unavoidable climbs, we will mainly be descending gradually. Finally, we will reach our destination at Dur village, where our long journey on foot comes to an end. Here, transportation will be arranged to take us to our hotel in Bumthang. We will spend the night at the hotel, enjoying the comfort and rest after our trekking adventure.

Day 27: Bumthang – Punakha

As we depart from Bumthang, we leave behind the serene beauty of the valleys and the majestic mountains. The road meanders through the rugged terrains, crossing over streams and rivers, passing by the quaint villages, and the lush green forests.

As we move forward, we ascend up to the Yotong La Pass (3425m) and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. We then descend towards Trongsa valley, passing by the Trongsa Dzong, an impressive fortress built in the 17th century.

Continuing on the journey, we pass through the small town of Wangdue and finally arrive at Punakha. Along the way, we get to witness the natural beauty of the Bhutanese countryside, with its rolling hills, cascading waterfalls, and serene landscapes.

These unique creatures, with the head of a goat and the body of a cow, can only be found in the eastern Himalayas. In Bhutan, they are exclusively found in the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Park.
